Sentinels guard treasure like resources, ingredients, runes, items and artefacts. There are 9 regular types of sentinels, their strength indicated by a number: sentinels level 1 to 9.
Additionally, for each league there are three exemplars of the special sentinels type A. These sentinels stand guard over a unique treasure, one of the mysterious artefacts . A sentinel A has the same strength as a sentinel 2 and has the same amount of resources, but gives no items.

Locating
The locations of the sentinels are marked as coloured dragon heads in the Mad Eye. The colour corresponds to the sentinel's level. In the search bar at the right you can choose which level of sentinel you want to see (1-9, A or all)

It is possible to spy on a sentinel before attacking to estimate the strength of its defence.
Attacking a sentinel
An attack on a sentinel does not yield experience points for the sentinel units that are killed. Experience points are rewarded only for the own losses. Therefore, a fight against a sentinel yields only half the experience points compared to a fight against another magician. This changes if you attack a sentinel defended by a magician. Then the awarded experience points depend on the sentinel's and the defender's strength.
Sentinel have different levels with different strength. You can see the level of a particular sentinel in your Mad Eye. The higher the level of a sentinel, the more resources and ingredients can be looted.
As a rule of thumb, you should take an army as strong as a 4 with as many "0"s as the sentinel's level to attack (Sentinel 1: 40, Sentinel 2: 400, Sentinel 3: 4000,...).
Defending a sentinel
Sentinels of level 2 or higher can be defended by a hero and his horde, so you have to be cautious when attacking a sentinel. If you want to defend a sentinel, your hero has to be in the same valley as the sentinel. The status of the hero has to be valley defence. If the status is area defence, only allied units are defended, not the neutral sentinels.
Outcome of an attack
Victory
If you win against a sentinel, its remaining units disappear and some time later a new sentinel will spawn somewhere in the world. Looted ingredients are credited to your profile immediately. Artefacts are transferred to your main palace and items are put into your item box. Only transporting the looted resources is your own responsibility. If you did not bring enough Unicorn Carts, excess loot will be dropped in the valley, meaning that you can come back and get it later. If there is a palace in the valley, the loot is moved there.
Defeat
If you are defeated by the sentinel, its remaining units guard the treasure until the sentinel is beaten.
